Wrestling gold for Mongolia, Iran and Vietnam
Danang, Vietnam, October 1, 2016: When Baljinnyam Damjin took to the sandy ring for the beach wrestling competition at the 5th Asian Beach Games on Saturday, he wasn’t only fighting for his country; he was fighting to defend his nation’s proud wrestling tradition. “Mongolia is famous for wrestling,” he said, after overpowering Choi Sung-min of Korea in the men’s under 60kg final to win the gold medal.
“Even though this is the first international games of my career, I had the image of winning the gold medal before I came here. “I wanted to show the Mongolian style of wrestling – attack, attack and attack. This is my style also. My tactic was to dominate the fight from the beginning and to use the chances provided by the mistakes of the Korean.”
Damjin, 22, did just that, scoring the three points required for victory within 55 seconds – and impressing the large and enthusiastic crowd in the temporary stadium on the beach at the main Bien Dong Park cluster. To reach the late-afternoon final, Damjin had beaten opponents from Syria, Vietnam and Kyrgyzstan in quick succession in the morning.
The bronze medals went to Komchan Ngamthaweesuk of Thailand and Azamat Uulu Kenzhebek of Kyrgyzstan. It was Mongolia’s first gold medal of the beach wrestling tournament, and followed a first wrestling gold for Iran at ABG5 in the men’s under 70kg category. Mohammad Naderi was the source of the Iranian gold, defeating Pakistan’s Nazir Nazir 3-0 after 64 seconds to defend the crown he won at the 4th ABG in Phuket, Thailand, in 2014.
Naderi, who is from Zanjan in Iranian Azerbaijan, was a national champion in freestyle wrestling and the vast experience of this 32-year-old campaigner proved too much for all four opponents as he won every match 3-0. The bronze medals went to Batzorig Buyanjav of Mongolia and Kim Jun-chul of Korea.
Vietnam won its second wrestling gold medal through Tran Thi Huong in the women’s over 70kg category. Chang Hui-Tsz of Chinese Taipei took the silver and there were bronze medals for Japan’s Miku Saito and Vietnam’s Truong Thi Thanh Hien.
