Muscat, Oman: The winner of the OCA’s second Asian Games Youth Reporter Project has been decided. He is Hassan Sulaiman Al Balushi, aged 16, from Dorrat Al-Khaleej Private School in Muscat. The OCA made the announcement at the Fun Run + Learn event on Tuesday, following the Youth Reporter Project at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex the previous day. Around 130 students aged from 10 to 17 from 12 schools attended the three-hour workshop on Monday.
After a two-hour seminar based on a typical working day for a sports reporter at the Asian Games, students had to write their own news article based on information provided such as the biography of the athlete, the official result and report and the comments from the gold medal winner. Thirty essays survived the first editing cut, and then 10 finalists provided the shortlist.
Organisers were so impressed with the enthusiasm, creativity and diligence of the students that the Oman Olympic Committee decided to award three consolation prizes. They went to: Sara Hatem Naser (14), Pakistan School Muscat; Saad Rasool (16), Pakistan School Muscat; and Amaan Naushad (15), Indian School Al Ghubra.
Hassan’s entry was selected in first place because he had included all the main points in the news article, as well as embellishing the facts with his own knowledge and observations. He will now be invited to become a member of the OCA media team at the 17th Asian Games in Incheon, Korea, in 2014, working for the OCA’s official newsletter Sporting Asia as well as the official websites of the OCA www.ocasia.org
and the organising committee.
