Male, Maldives: Sports-loving Mohamed Dhaniyal Ageel was on the basketball court on Sunday afternoon when he heard that he had won the OCA’s Youth Reporter Project, held the previous day to kick off the OCA Fun Run + Learn series in the Maldives. After rushing from practice and changing into a Fun Run + Learn T-shirt for the prize presentation at Ekuveni Track Ground, the 15-year-old student from Iskandhar School said it was a big surprise to be chosen as the winner from 80 entries.

“I just tried to follow in the exercise what I had learned in the seminar,” said Dhaniyal, whose news article followed a 90-minute workshop on a typical working day for the sports media at a major multi-sport event. “First I wrote a draft to get everything in the right order and then I wrote it out quickly to beat the deadline.

“I think I learned a lot about how the sports media works and how attractive the job is. I also want to thank my English teachers at school for the extra work they put in to help the students before the reporter project.”

Dhaniyal will be invited to the 17th Asian Games in Incheon, Korea, in 2014 as part of the OCA media team. “I think it is a great opportunity for me to attend such a big sports event. I feel very thrilled about it and I hope to make the school proud,” he added.
