OCA event will celebrate sport in Maldives

08 Feb 2013
Male, Maldives: The Olympic Council of Asia’s Fun Run + Learn project in Male this weekend will double up as a sports carnival for the Maldives Olympic Committee. At a meeting with the OCA delegation at the Maldives Olympic Committee HQ on Friday afternoon, MOC President Ibrahim Ismail Ali said Asian Games athletes, sports personalities and VIPs from government and the sports community would all be involved in the OCA event.

“We will have 11 schools participating in the three events over the weekend – the Youth Reporter Project on Saturday afternoon, the Fun Learn quiz on Sunday morning and the Fun Run on Sunday afternoon,” Mr Ismail said. “Sunday is a full school day in Maldives, but we have requested the principal of the schools to let the children do the quiz. They have all agreed to this, so we can look forward to an enjoyable weekend of activities.”

The OCA’s Asian Games Youth Reporter Project will kick off the festivities on Saturday afternoon, with 100 students aged between 14 and 16 expected to attend. The 11 schools have selected their attendees.

The Fun Learn quiz will test the students’ knowledge of the Asian Games, the OCA and of sport in general, and then all students from the two previous activities will take part in the 2.2-km Fun Run on Sunday afternoon. The runners will be aged between nine and 16 and will be joined by Asian Games athletes from Maldives, sports personalities, VIPs and media.

“The parents and teachers will also be very welcome to attend the Fun Run,” added Mr Ismail. Another nice touch is the fact that the runners from the 11 schools will line up behind the school name board, Olympic Games-style, at the Fun Run presentation and Closing Ceremony, while other boards will display the year and the host city of the previous 16 Asian Games, starting from New Delhi in 1951, as well as the 17th Asian Games in Incheon, Korea, in 2014. Souvenir T-shirts, caps, medals, certificates and other mementos will be distributed to the participants.
