Over 2,000 students join Mini Olympics

Manama, Bahrain, March 20, 2017: The Bahrain Olympic Committee’s 4th Mini Olympics was declared open on Sunday at a spectacular opening ceremony at Isa Sports City’s Bahrain Volleyball Association gym at in Riffa. The Mini Olympics is being organised by Bahrain NOC in cooperation with the Ministry of Education.

His Majesty King Hamad’s Representative for Charity Works and Youth Affairs, Supreme Council for Youth and Sports Chairman and Bahrain Olympic Committee President Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa inaugurated the Mini Olympics, which will run until March 30.

Other high-ranking officials present included Education Minister Dr Majid bin Ali Al Nuaimi, Supreme Council for Youth and Sports Deputy General Secretary and BOC General Secretary Abdulrahman Askar, as well as representatives of sports federations and the ministry.

In an official statement, Askar said he was pleased with the outstanding turnout this year and the impressive participation from the government and private schools in all 14 sports – football, 3-on-3 basketball, volleyball, handball, table tennis, athletics, cricket, hockey, swimming, water sports, gymnastics, taekwondo, jiu jitsu and karting.

“This year we have more than 2,000 students from 42 government and private schools taking part, which is something that exceeded our expectations,” said Askar. “We are very pleased and proud to bring this event every year in an attempt to promote the Olympic values among government and private schools in the Kingdom and motivate them to practise sports activities and follow a healthy life style.

“We look to discover promising sports talent, build a solid foundation and involve them in competitive sporting activities organised by sports clubs and associations. We are also keen to establish competitive sports activities organised at the school,” added Askar.
