AIBA President Wu receives award

26 Jul 2010
On the occasion of the Extraordinary Executive Committee meeting of the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) in Marrakech, Morocco, President Wu Ching-Kuo was awarded the Royal Order of Al Aloui, the highest distinction awarded by King Mohammed VI of Morocco. President Wu received the award from the Minister for Youth and Sport, Moncef Bellkhayat, in the presence of IOC member Nawal El Moutawakel and Moroccan Boxing Federation President Abdel Jaouad Belhaj.

In other boxing news, the Executive Committee agreed to move the venues of the 2010 Congress and 2011 World Championships from Busan, Korea, due to ongoing leadership problems in the Korean Amateur Boxing Federation. The 2010 Congress will be held in Almaty, Kazakhstan, and the 2011 World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan.

"The World Championships is the most important event for any sport governing body," said AIBA President Wu. "This event will only be able to succeed with support from a highly professional and committed local organising committee backed by both the host city and the national host federation. Unfortunately, given the current situation with the governing body for boxing in South Korea, such conditions are clearly not in place."
