Pomp and ceremony in Bangladesh

09 Feb 2010
Magnificent fireworks painted the Dhaka sky with an array of colours to mark the spectacular closing ceremony of the 11th South Asian Games at the Bangabandh National Stadium on Tuesday. The 12 superb days of glorious sporting activity, the ups and downs, the ecstasy and the tears, and the ultimate message that “Sport is the Greatest Unifier” was showcased in every minute of the games.

In front of 20,000 enthralled spectators, President Zillur Rahman said he hoped the games would continue to flourish and foster the relationship among the sub-continental neighbours.

"I hope that the fraternity and friendship built among the participating countries through the 11th South Asian Games will bring the people of this region closer," he said.

The President lauded the participants, the organisers and officials for making the largest sporting extravaganza of the region a success.

"I extend my heartiest congratulations to all players and officials for their sportsmanship and wish for their gradual improvement and prosperity,” he said.

On his arrival at the stadium, the President was received by Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith, the chairman of the organising committee of the 11th South Asian Games.

Superb fireworks, a splendid show of laser beams and a breathtaking display of traditional dance, along with a fabulous aquatic show, stamped a lasting memory in the minds of the people as well as lifting the image of the country as a true sporting nation.

Bangladesh hosted the biggest South Asian Games with pomp and splendour and is looking forward to hosting more in the future.

General Md. Abdul Mubeen, president of the South Asian Olympic Council, officially declared the games closed before handing over the games flag to Suresh Kalmadi, president of the Indian Olympic Association, as India will host the next edition of the SA Games.
