09 Nov 2017
Colombo, Sri Lanka, November 9, 2017: Almost eight years of dedication and determination has reaped rich rewards with the publication of a coffee table-style book that is a truly remarkable addition to the history of the Olympic Council of Asia.

“Asian Sports – Through the Eyes of a Philatelist” brings together sports-related postage stamps from the 45 National Olympic Committees in an extravagant and lavish journey through the continent.

Coming in at 391 pages, the book is the proud publication of OCA Vice President Hemasiri Fernando of Sri Lanka – a legacy of his time as Chairman of the OCA Culture and Education Committee.

It was brought to the attention of the Olympic sports movement at the OCA General Assembly in Turkmenistan in September with a special presentation of the first copy to the OCA President, HE Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah.

In his introductory message, Sheikh Ahmad says Olympic Games and other sports-related stamps have played a huge part in the promotion and legacy of the Olympic Games and sports movement around the world.

“In such a context, the Olympic Council of Asia identifying the close affinity between sports and philately, as well as the most significant unity among its member countries, is launching this remarkable book “Asian Sports Through the Eyes of a Philatelist” , which will surely help enhancing the great sporting spirit in the region,” says Sheikh Ahmad.

Mr Fernando outlines the tremendous amount of painstaking work and perseverance behind the scenes that enabled the book to be completed, and thanks the OCA President for his support and encouragement.

“Finally, the book is in your hand,” says Mr Fernando. “Something unique in comparison with any other publication and you could no doubt appreciate the dedicated, hard work and expertise invested in this precious book,” he concludes. The chapters include colourful illustrations, lists of medals in Olympic Games and Asian Games, a description of each country or region and, of course, the fascinating sets of stamps celebrating various sporting events.
