Daimler SF brings joy to Timor-Leste young footballers

Dili, Timor-Leste: The cup isn’t made of gold, the winners have no prize money, but the two-day Daimler Street Football Project brought much joy to young footballers in Dili. The Daimler Street Football Timor-Leste Tournament united many Dili street footballers together in the capital city, transferring them from the street to a proper indoor gymnasium to enjoy a safe and cheerful football environment.

Twelve year old Natalino, who won the best boy player of the tournament, has been identified as the rising star. His dribbling skills not only impressed every fan inside the stadium, but also received recognition from the Football Federation of Timor Leste. He has been chosen to join the federation's talent camp to receive proper football training.

“I often play football with my friends,” Natalino said with pride while holding his trophy in his arms. “I can’t play football every day because of school, but I do play whenever I have time.

“I learn all the skills from TV. While watching football on TV I try to memorise all the moves of my favourite player, especially Messi. I want to be like him some day when I grow up and become a professional footballer."

Vanessa Filomena Pimentel Fernandes from Colegio Paulo VI was named best girl player of the tournament. The same age as Natalino, Vanessa is also regarded to be a future tar of Timor-Leste women's football.

“I like football, but I also play basketball and running. Thanks to the Daimler Street Football Project we can play in this nice gymnasium stadium. Hopefully someday I can play for Timor-Leste women’s national team.”

Daimler Street Football Project was co-founded by Olympic Council of Asia and Daimler in 2011. Timor-Leste became the second country hosting the event after Bhutan.
