Afghanistan NOC elects Hashimy as new President/CEO

Kabul, Afghanistan: The Afghanistan National Olympic Committee (A-NOC) is pleased to announce that it has unanimously elected Mr. Fahim Hashimy as its new President and Chief Executive Officer. The vote was taken during the A-NOC’s Extraordinary Session of the General Assembly.  The election marks the first step by the A-NOC in its democratic and newly independent identity. The A-NOC had formerly been under the organizational umbrella of the Afghanistan National Sport Directorate.

Mr. Hashimy indicated the A- NOC will be guided by the highest principles including a commitment to revitalize, nurture and promote a commitment to the ideals and goals of the Olympic Charter and the Olympic Movement, through a total commitment to the development and training of young athletes aspiring to excellence and the embodiment of international goodwill through sport.

“This is an extraordinary moment for the Olympic Movement in Afghanistan.  It is a new day for our National Olympic Committee and the democratic processes of our country.  We are sending the strongest possible signal to the youth of our country there will be new opportunities that participating in sport will provide them,” said Mr. Hashimy.

He added, “The people of Afghanistan believe in the Olympic Movement.  We believe in the positive, life changing opportunities the Olympics brings to our people. We believe in Peace through Sport. We know that through participation in events hosted in Asia by the Olympic Council of Asia and worldwide events of the International Olympic Committee, that thousands of our young people will be inspired to realize their Olympic dreams.”

Mr. Hashimy said that National Olympic Committee is looking forward to full participation in upcoming international events.  These include the International Olympic Committee’s Youth Olympic Games to be held in Nanjing, China, in August and the Olympic Council of Asia 17th Asian Games, to be held in September in Incheon, Korea. Mr. Hashimy, 33, is President and CEO of the Hashimy Group, with interests in media, aviation, mining and construction throughout Afghanistan.
