Incheon provides update for 2014

11 Nov 2010
Guangzhou, China: Organisers of the 17th Asian Games in Incheon, Korea, in 2014 made a progress report to the Olympic Council of Asia’s Sports Committee on Thursday. The report, presented by Kim Kwang-Soo, Director of the Sports Department of organising committee IAGOC, included a proposal for the sports programme.

The OCA decided last year that the number of sports in the Asian Games should not exceed 35 – 28 from the Olympic Games and a maximum of seven to reflect the diverse sporting culture of Asia’s five zones. The 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou features 42 sports and 476 events.

Incheon organisers are hoping to include baseball, bowling, kabaddi, sepaktakraw, softball, squash and wushu alongside the 28 sports on the list for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

After outlining the grounds for inclusion of the seven non-Olympic sports, Sports Director Kim then gave a rundown on the competition venues. A plan for 40 venues, including 20 new constructions, was approved in June 2009, and an additional nine venues are under review.

The revision would include 23 new venues, two of which are under construction, 13 under design and eight under review. All venues will be completed by August 2013, with the exception of the Main Stadium, which is scheduled to be completed by July 2014, two months before the start of the Games. The 49 venues have not been confirmed by the government.

OCA Sports Committee Chairman Zhang Jilong thanked IAGOC for their presentation, and said the report and proposals would be passed on to the OCA Executive Board for the EB meeting on November 12. The Executive Board will discuss the seven sports issue and the final decision will be made at the OCA General Assembly on November 13.

The slogan of the 17th Asian Games is “Diversity Shines Here”.
