HRH Prince Jigyel signs Fun Learn caps for some admiring students.
A royal occasion for Bhutan Fun Learn students

22 Feb 2013
Thimphu, Bhutan: The Olympic Council of Asia’s Fun Learn quiz in Bhutan on Friday morning turned out to be a day to remember for the 120 students from schools in and around the capital Thimphu. This was due to the presence of the President of the Bhutan Olympic Committee, His Royal Highness Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck, 28-year-old heir presumptive to the throne of Bhutan.

The dashing young prince attended the opening ceremony of the Fun Learn quiz at Lungtenzampa School and helped out in the organisation of the competition while chatting with officials and other dignitaries. The top students in the quiz had the honour of being presented with their medals by His Royal Highness and were made to feel at home in his presence with his friendly manner.

At the end of the competition he was happy to pose for souvenir photographs with students outside the school hall in the bright winter sunshine, and even agreed to sign the Fun Learn cap of one particularly adventurous student – a decision that led to a long queue forming rapidly and delaying his departure by several minutes. “It is very exciting,” said one young female student. “We all fall for him.”

A male student added: “This has made it a special day for me. I never thought I would get such an opportunity and I will never forget it.” His Royal Highness then entertained visiting delegates from the Olympic Council of Asia and 2014 Incheon Asian Games Organising Committee over lunch at a nearby archery club, where he showed off his skills in a traditional archery tournament which attracted a large crowd of locals and tourists. HRH Prince Jigyel is the younger brother of the King of Bhutan, His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck, who celebrated his 33rd birthday on Thursday.
