ANOC Awards better and better says Sheikh Ahmad

03 Nov 2017

Prague, Czech Republic, November 3, 2017: The President of ANOC, HE Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah, began the second day of the 22nd ANOC General Assembly at the Prague Hilton Hotel with high praise for the ANOC Awards 2017 held the previous evening.

The annual awards were established by ANOC in 2014 and have filled a gap in the global Olympic movement by honouring individual athletes, teams, sports legends and leaders from Olympic Games or other major events such as World Championships.

The fourth edition of the ANOC Awards took place at the Forum Karlin on Thursday evening and thrilled over 1,300 guests with a slick combination of continent-by-continent awards to the top female and male athletes, short interviews with the winners, a series of short, sharp and highly entertaining cultural and artistic performances and, finally, the lifetime achievement awards. The formal proceedings were fitted around full dinner service for the guests, making the two hours fly by.

“I want to thank you all for attending the ANOC Awards yesterday and I congratulate all the athletes and sports leaders who received the prestigious awards,” said Sheikh Ahmad, who also noted that IOC President Thomas Bach had fully supported and enjoyed the occasion.

“The Gala is better and better with the experience,” added Sheikh Ahmad. “The mood is better in terms of the athletes really enjoying the awards and sharing their happiness with their families and NOCs.”

Sheikh Ahmad said the Awards was now “stable in our house” and was a celebration for not only ANOC but also the IOC and International Federations.

“We share the gala,” said Sheikh Ahmad. “I hope the ANOC Awards next year will continue to get better and better.”

The 2018 ANOC General Assembly and ANOC Awards will be in Tokyo, with the 2019 edition in San Diego, California, on the sidelines of the inaugural ANOC World Beach Games.
