Students get down to business at the Youth Reporter Project.
Over 130 students attend OCA’s YRP in Muscat

23 Apr 2012
Muscat, Oman: The OCA’s Fun Run + Learn series to promote the 17th Asian Games in Incheon, Korea, in 2014 resumed on Monday morning with the Youth Reporter Project (YRP) at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in the Omani capital Muscat. Over 130 students, aged from 10 to 17, from 12 schools attended the three-hour workshop, which provided an insight into the typical working day of a sports reporter covering an Asian Games.

The seminar concentrated on the preparations required before attending a major multi-sports event, such as compiling the biography of an athlete, learning about the different sports and researching the history of the sports and distribution of medals at previous Asian Games.

They also received guidance on how to construct a news story and took part in a press conference-style environment by asking questions about the life of a sports reporter to Mr. Saeed Al-Harrasi, Media and Public Relations Officer for the Oman Olympic Committee.

The workshop concluded with a writing task for the students. After receiving the biography of a famous Omani athlete, Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi, together with a report of Oman winning the men’s football gold medal at the Asian Games and the comments of Al-Habsi after the match, students had to compile their own news article from the information provided.

The best entry will be revealed on Tuesday, when the Fun Run and Fun Learn quiz take place, on the sidelines of the Olympic Solidarity/OCA Regional Forum for West and Central Asia. The Chairman of the Oman Olympic Committee, IOC member Mr. Habib Macki, welcomed everyone to the seminar.
