London Olympics update: Handball

London, England: Asia’s sole representatives in the men’s and women’s handball tournaments of the London Olympic Games – Korea – discovered their opponents in the preliminary round-robin competition following the draw on Wednesday, May 30. In the women's competition, Beijing 2008 bronze medal-winners Korea will face world, Olympic and European champions Norway, along with four other European teams, in Group B.

In the 2008 Olympics, Korea beat China 31-23 in the quarter-finals before losing 29-28 in the semi-finals to Norway, who would go on to beat Russia in the final and win gold. Korea beat Hungary 33-28 to take the bronze. The 1-2-3 in the men’s event was France, Iceland and Spain.

Handball will be played from July 28-August 12, firstly at the Copper Box before moving to the basketball arena - also in the Olympic Park - for the knockout stages. The men's and women's competitions begin with a round-robin tournament, with the top four in each six-team group qualifying for the quarter-finals.


Group A: France, Sweden, Iceland, Britain, Argentina, Tunisia
Group B: Spain, Croatia, Hungary, Serbia, Denmark, Korea.


Group A: Montenegro, Russia, Croatia, Britain, Brazil, Angola
Group B: Norway, Spain, Denmark, France, Sweden, Korea.
