29 Nov 2013
Ashgabat, Turkmenistan: The host nation of the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games has much grander plans for the long-term future of sport in Turkmenistan - organising the OCA's showpiece event, the Asian Games.

During the first Turkmenistan International Sports Media Forum held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan NOC General Secretary Azat Muradov revealed the Central Asian nation’s ambitious plan to put the country on the world sports map.

“Under the vision of Turkmenistan's President, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, of using sport as an effective tool to improve the country’s international reputation and build a healthy society, our nation’s ultimate goal will be hosting the Asian Games in the future," Azat told 40 international media.

“The 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games is the first international sports event for Turkmenistan. We will use this opportunity to learn and start building a great sports nation and a healthy lifestyle for the people."

According to Osman Karakus, coordinator of Polimeks Construction Company, the first phase of the vast Olympic Complex in Ashgabat city is 85 per cent complete. This includes the world's biggest indoor velodrome, two indoor arenas, a medical rehabilitation centre, an 800-bed hotel with a press centre, athletes' canteen, artificial lake, two outdoor sports fields for team sports and a business centre. The work will be completed by April 2014.

The sports facilities in phase two are 10 per cent complete, and the main project for phase three, which includes a 45,000-capacity Olympic Stadium, will be finished in early 2017.
