London Olympics update: Iran

Tehran, Iran: Cyclist Alireza Haghi is the latest Iranian athlete to earn a berth in the London Olympic Games this summer, according to a report on the official website of the National Olympic Committee of the Islamic Republic of Iran. In the Individual Time Trial held in the Iranian city of Yazd , which was the final selection round for Iran 's Olympic place, Haghi won the 50-km race in a time of 1 hour, 11.042 seconds.

Haghi, who will compete in the 13-stage tour of China to prepare for London , is now one of three riders of Iran in the 2012 Olympic Games Road Race. He will also compete in the Individual Time Trial. Other qualifiers from Iran include: Greco-Roman wrestlers Habibollah Akhlaghi (84kg) and Parviz Hadi (120kg), rowers Mohsen Shadi Naghadeh (men’s heavyweight single sculls) and Solmaz Abbasi (women's heavyweight single sculls) and fencer Mojtaba Abedini (men's individual saber). 

Abedini, who has a Russian coach, is the first Iranian fencer to qualify for the Olympics. Iran will also be represented by four boxers: Ali Mazaheri (91kg), Amin Ghasemipour (69kg), Mehdi Tolouti (64kg) and Ehsan Ruzbahani (81kg). Iran plans to send over 60 athletes to London and hopes to win six gold medals.
