The 5th Asian Beach Games Danang 2016 Closing Ceremony
Danang 2016 – the legacy will live long

03 Oct 2016
OLYMPIC COUNCIL OF ASIA – PRESS RELEASEBY H.E. SHEIKH AHMAD AL-FAHAD AL-SABAH, PRESIDENT, OLYMPIC COUNCIL OF ASIAPRESIDENT, ASSOCIATION OF NATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEES, MEMBER, INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEEDanang, Vietnam, October 3, 2016: Vietnam finished on top of the medals table at the end of the 5th Asian Beach Games on Sunday. But the host country was a winner in many other ways – and the legacy of this success will be felt for years to come.First of all, the local people and Danang city government deserve a lot of credit for staging this enjoyable and entertaining event along the magnificent beach and with the backdrop of the crashing waves of the South China Sea – watched over by the iconic Lady Buddha statue. The central coastal city of Danang has been a perfect host for the Asian Beach Games, with the compact nature of the games one of the most successful aspects. With so much action taking place in the tented villages along the beach, the local people have flocked to the events and filled the temporary stands. The 3,000 athletes and officials from National Olympic Committees around Asia have been very impressed with the hospitality and the scenic beauty of Danang, and many will no doubt return here or recommend the city as a holiday destination within South-East Asia. The media, too, has played a big part, led by the host broadcaster Vietnam TV. Several of the sports have been shown live on VTV, and the TV images have highlighted the spectacular beach, sea and mountains – ideal tourist promotion.Another pleasing aspect is that 35 teams won at least one medal, with no fewer than 27 winning gold, and this highlights the efforts of the OCA to give all athletes the chance to represent their flag in an international multi-sport event. The 14 sports, 22 disciplines and 172 events have produced some top-quality performances and action, notably on the last day of competition when the beach soccer and beach handball produced closely-fought finals in front of packed galleries at the two main clusters on the sea front. The reputation of Vietnam has been enhanced by their successful staging of the 5th Asian Beach Games, in terms of sports excellence, tourism and culture and traditions – and this legacy will last through generations.
