Kandy set to welcome OCA’s Fun Run + Learn series

Kandy, Sri Lanka: History and culture will join the programme for the next leg of the OCA’s Incheon Asian Games Fun Run + Learn project in Sri Lanka on November 3-4. The NOC of Sri Lanka has decided to hold the event in beautiful Kandy, the capital city of the Central Province of Sri Lanka. Kandy is the second largest city in the country after the capital Colombo. It was the last capital of the ancient kings’ era of Sri Lanka.

Kandy is the home of The Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), one of the most venerable places for the Buddhist community of Sri Lanka and all around the world. The programme will begin with the Asian Games Youth Reporter Project on Saturday, November 3, starting at 10am. The venue will be the Dharmaraja College Auditorium and 50 schoolchildren under 16 years old have been shortlisted to take part.

The Fun Learn quiz will be held on the following morning at the same venue and with the same number of participants. The Fun Run will take place on Sunday afternoon, starting at 3pm from Kandy Railway Station and finishing at Dharmaraja College, a route of approximately 5km. Five hundred schoolchildren will take part in age groups of 10-12, 12-14 and 14-16.

The invited guests include Hon. Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Minister of Sport, Hon. Sarath Ekanayake, Chief Minister of Central Province, VIP Guests, OCA and IAGOC officials, officials of the Ministries of Education & Sport and the media. Mr. Gamini Jayasinghe and Mr. Maxwell de Silva, Secretary General, will be representing the host NOC.

There will be cultural performances throughout the weekend, and the Fun Learn welcome speech will be given by Mr. B.L.H. Perera, Programme Director, NOC. At the conclusion of the Fun Run, Mr. Hemasiri Fernando, President, NOC, will give the opening address.

The OCA will be represented by Vahid Kardany, of the Technical Department at Kuwait HQ, and IAGOC by Mr Park Byungjin, Director General, Cultural Events & PR, HQ. The OCA is holding a series of Fun Run + Learn events to promote the 17th Asian Games in Incheon, Korea, from September 19-October 4, 2014.
