Uzbekistan NOC hosts Fun Run in Tashkent

14 Oct 2012
Tashkent, Uzbekistan: Around 500 youngsters took part in the 17th Incheon Asian Games Fun Run on a humid autumnal morning in Tashkent on Sunday. The runners competed in seven categories, including a Paralympic division, and the first three in each race received an assortment of prizes and mementos. Among the dignitaries attending the Fun Run were Mr Malik Babaev, President of the National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan; Mr Kwon Kyung Sang, Secretary General of the Incheon Asian Games Organising Committee (IAGOC); and Mr Jun Daewan, the Korean Ambassador in Tashkent.

The Fun Run took place in the National Park of A. Navoi and completed a busy weekend of Olympic-related activities involving the Olympic Council of Asia, IAGOC and NOC Uzbekistan. The programme began with the Asian Games Youth Reporter Project for 45 students on Saturday morning and was followed by the Fun Learn quiz on Saturday afternoon.

Looking back on the weekend, NOC President Babaev commented: “The weekend has not been only about sport but about developing the children and making them more interested in all aspects of sport. “For this we believe the activities have been a great success because of the smiles on the faces of the children and their thirst for knowledge.

“We could not have staged all these activities without the help of our partners and friends from the OCA. This has been an important experience for us, too, and I would like to thank everyone who has played a part in the weekend, especially the volunteers. I would also like to thank the media for publicising these events and giving the people more information about the NOC and OCA.”

Mr Kwon said Uzbekistan and Korea had enjoyed strong diplomatic relations for 20 years, and looked forward to welcoming Uzbekistan NOC to the 4th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Incheon in 2013 and to the 17th Asian Games in 2014. He said he expected Uzbekistan to be the team to beat in the kurash competition of the 4th AIMAG.

In conclusion, the Uzbekistan NOC President said he would continue to support the OCA President, HE Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah, in all his initiatives as President of the Association of National Olympic Committees.
