Sun shades and sunbeds fill Patong Beach
Phuket Beach Games will attract tourists, locals

27 Apr 2014
Phuket, Thailand: Phuket, Thailand, is already well known as one of the most exotic tourist destinations in South-East Asia, if not the world. But organisers of the 4th Asian Beach Games are making sure that the locals as well as the tourists will get a piece of the action when the beach and sea sports extravaganza starts on November 14.

Representatives of the Sports Authority of Thailand, the government’s funding arm for sport in Thailand, took an OCA delegation on a tour of the venue clusters on Sunday morning to outline the plans for the upcoming make-over.

The tour began at the magnificent Hilton Phuket Arcadia Resort and Spa, which will be the HQ hotel for the OCA and organising committee PABGOC during the November 14-23 Asian Beach Games.

Across the coastal road from the Hilton is the picture postcard Karon Beach, which is one of the two main venue clusters and will accommodate several sports including beach water polo and marathon swimming, beach handball, beach volleyball, beach woodball, beach basketball, bodybuilding and sailing/windsurfing.

From there the tour continued to the much busier Patong Beach, where beach kabaddi, beach wrestling/beach kurash, Muay Thai, beach petanque, beach sepaktakraw, foot volley and jet ski will take place.

While Karon Beach and Patong Beach cater primarily for the tourists, the same cannot be said of another major venue, Saphan Hin Sports Centre near the centre of Phuket city. Located by the sea but with no beach, the tropical, sandy grounds will see beach flag football, beach soccer, extreme sports and sport climbing.

By hosting events in this area, organisers are catering to the demands of the Phuket residents, as the area is already busy with locals taking their daily exercise or relaxing in the shade of the palm trees. There is also a Sports Authority of Thailand branch office on hand, as well as a sports centre that will become a venue media centre.
