Sumudu, 15, is the pride of Sri Lanka

04 Nov 2012
Kandy, Sri Lanka: Fifteen-year old Sumudu Rathnakumari, from a remote village in the Central Province of Sri Lanka, has surprised everyone by winning the Asian Games Quiz as part of the 16th edition of the Incheon Asian Games 2014 Fun Run + Learn Project. Sumudu, who comes from Pujapitiya village, 40km from the provincial capital of Kandy, emerged victorious from a quiz entry of more than 50 students from 38 schools.

“Today’s quiz was very interesting,” she said. “I was quite nervous when it came to the last question to decide who would be the overall winner. I’m so happy that I won it. I will continue studying and make everyone proud in the final round of the Asian Games Quiz in Incheon.”

Sumudu’s father is a labourer on construction sites and her mother is a housewife. In order to improve the family’s financial situation, her older brother assists her father and her older sister is a domestic helper in Saudi Arabia.

“Today’s result fulfils our objectives of hosting an Asian Games Fun Run + Learn in Kandy rather than in the capital city,” Dr. Perera, Sri Lanka NOC Academy Director, said proudly in his closing speech. “Hosting this event in Kandy increases the value for everyone. We like to see the Asian Games spreading to every corner of Sri Lanka, especially to many remote villages.”

OCA Vice President and Sri Lanka NOC President Hemasiri Fernando, Sri Lanka NOC Secretary General Maxwell de Silva, OCA representative Vahid Kardany and Director General of IAGOC Cultural Events and PR HQ Park Byung Jin presented certificates to all participants.
