Tokyo 2020 updates Asian NOCs on Olympic preparations

29 Mar 2017
Incheon, Korea, March 29, 2017: Although the next Summer Olympic Games are still over three years away, Asia’s National Olympic Committees were given a glimpse of what to expect at Tokyo 2020. The Head of NOC Services and Relations for the Tokyo 2020 organising committee, Toru Kobayashi, provided an update on preparations to NOC delegates from Central, South East and East Asia during the final session of the Olympic Solidarity/OCA Regional Forum at the Grand Hyatt Incheon on Wednesday.

With 800 staff in 12 bureaus already in place, the organising committee is in full flow as the countdown continues to the XXXII Olympiad, which will take place from July 24 to August 9, 2020. Mr Kobayashi informed the delegates that competition venues for the five new sports – baseball/softball, karate, skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing – had already been confirmed, and that the new sports resulted in 18 additional events.

The latest venue to be confirmed was baseball/softball in Fukushima, which was badly affected by the earthquake and tsunami of March 2011. The 33 sports will be contested in two main hubs: the Heritage Zone using stadiums from the 1964 Olympic Games and the Tokyo Bay Zone, with the Olympic Village situated between the two zones.

Regarding pre-Games training camps, the NOCs heard that the Tokyo organisers have more than 370 sports facilities available in more than 200 towns and cities throughout the country. Another point of interest was the NOC Open Days. Mr Kobayashi reported that the first Open Day had been conducted with 13 NOCs from around the world, and four more Open Days were planned.

The next one will be this summer, followed by spring and summer 2018 and finally spring 2019. The enthusiasm of the Japanese public for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games was reflected in the fact that 800,000 people lined the streets of Tokyo for the Japan team parade following Rio 2016, he added.
