Nanjing spreads Olympic spirit

18 Sep 2012
Nanjing, China: The week-long Nanjing Youth Olympic Cultural Festival and the 2012 Carnival of Nanjing International Day opened on September 9 in Xuanwu Lake Park. The opening ceremony and carnival events, jointly held by the Nanjing Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (NYOGOC) and Nanjing Municipal Government, attracted more than 1,000 youngsters from Nanjing middle schools and over 300 overseas students from all over the country and the city.

Yang Weize, executive chairman of NYOGOC, attended the ceremony and made an opening address. The cultural festival, now in its second year, aims to spread the Olympic spirit and promote exchange and friendship among the youth of Asia, as well as encouraging youngsters to take part in sport, cultural and educational activities and lead a healthy lifestyle.

Festival activities included the Nanjing Sport Photo Exhibition entitled “Enjoy Fitness with Youth Olympic Games”, an interactive dialogue with Olympic champions focused on “The Olympics is all around you” and a taekwondo demonstration between China and Korea.

The Nanjing International Cultural Exchange Day captured more public attention, as thousands of foreign residents in Jiangsu province - from USA, UK, Australia, Korea and more than 20 other nations - joined together with a huge number of local citizens to participate in this exotic cultural gala. Nanjing will host the OCA’s 2nd Asian Youth Games in August 2013 and the IOC’s 2nd Youth Olympic Games the following year.
