Manila, Philippines, July 9, 2018: Olympic Games silver medallist Hidilyn Diaz leads a 272-strong Philippines team to the 18th Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang from August 18 to September 2. Diaz, 27, finished second in the women’s -53kg weightlifting at Rio 2016 to become her country’s first Olympic medallist in 20 years. She also competed at Beijing 2008 and London 2012.
Diaz won the silver medal in the OCA’s 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, last September. Track star Eric Cray is another stand-out in the Philippines’ delegation.
The 29-year-old Filipino American specialises in the 100m sprint and 400m hurdles and is the reigning Asian champion in the 400m hurdles, having won gold at the Asian Athletics Championships in India in July 2017.
The Rio Olympian also holds four gold medals, one silver and one bronze from three appearances in the South East Asian (SEA) Games from 2013-2017, including a golden double in the 100m and 400m hurdles at Singapore 2015.
The Philippines’ track team also includes Rio Olympian Mary Joy Tabal in the women’s marathon.
