Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei, December 16, 2015: The Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council has announced that three top Bruneian athletes have been awarded Rio 2016 scholarships through the IOC’s Olympic Solidarity, reports the Brunei Times.
Md Fakhri Ismail and Maizurah Abdul Rahim were chosen for athletics while Tiara Shahril Anwar was chosen for swimming. The three athletes will each receive US$1,000 per month towards training and competition expenses, from November 2015 to July 2016, according to the NOC.
A signing ceremony between the NOC, the athletes and their respective national sports associations took place recently at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas, with NOC President His Royal Highness Prince Hj Sufri Bolkiah signing on behalf of the NOC.
HRH Prince Hj Sufri Bolkiah stated that the athletes should not waste the opportunity given to them and needed to show improvement every month until the 2016 Rio Olympics, which will run from August 5-21.
