Indonesia submits official bid to host 2032 Olympic Games

Date : 08 Oct 2018

Buenos Aires, Argentina, October 8, 2018: A few weeks after revealing that Indonesia was keen to host the 2032 Summer Olympic Games, the country’s President Joko Widodo and the Indonesia Olympic Committee have submitted an official bid to the International Olympic Committee.

IOC President Thomas Bach confirmed that Indonesia had made an official bid to host the Olympics in 14 years’ time. Indonesia is likely to come up against other bids from Asian countries, including a joint-bid by North and South Korea, India and China, as well as Egypt.

“The candidature has just been confirmed by a letter from the President of Indonesia and by the President of the National Olympic Committee,” Bach revealed on Saturday in Buenos Aires.

Bach was speaking on a panel at the Olympism In Action Forum where Argentine President Mauricio Macri announced that Buenos Aires too would bid to host the 2032 Olympic Games.

President Widodo first revealed Indonesia’s interest in hosting the 2032 Olympic after meeting with Bach during last month’s Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang. The capital city is most likely to be the main city of the Indonesian bid.

The 2032 Games became the next available Summer Games to host after the IOC awarded the 2028 Games to Los Angeles last year, a record-breaking 11 years ahead of the opening ceremony. At the same time Paris was awarded the 2024 Games.

Shanghai’s deputy director general of sports Luo Wenhua has announced that the Chinese city could consider a 2032 bid after closely watching the progress of the upcoming Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024, while it sets a course to become a “globally famous” sport city.

Other interest in the 2032 Games has come from Brisbane in Australia, India, Germany (a multi-city bid), Russia and Egypt. Last month, at a summit between South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un it was announced that the two Koreas would launch a joint bid.

Argentine President Macri while signaling his country’s interest to host the 2032 Olympics, also cautioned that the pressing need right now was to “reduce poverty and that organising these types of events is no longer easy”.

But he said the 2018 Buenos Aires Youth Olympic Games has introduced new concepts like an inclusive Opening Ceremony that was held at the famous landmark Obelisk and open to the public. “I think that these innovations we have introduced will help to add another value.”

The IOC is scheduled to elect the 2032 host city in 2025.
