Bhubaneswar, India, November 3, 2019: Indian men and women hockey teams have both qualified for Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
India’s men’s team mauled Russia 11-3 on aggregate while the women’s team defeated United States with a 6-5 aggregate.
Rani Rampal booked India’s ticket to the Olympics when she scored a crucial goal in Saturday’s second game which India lost 4-1. But they had done enough a day earlier when they scored a handsome 5-1 victory in Bhubaneswar to give the home team a 6-5 aggregate.
On Friday, the Indian women were living a dream with a comfortable four-goal advantage against USA and one foot through the door to Tokyo. But the visitors came back strongly in the second match and it was left to Rampal’s heroics in the 48th minute to secure an Olympic berth.
The Indian men began slowly in the two-legged Olympic qualifiers beating Russia 4-2 on Friday. But they turned on the style on Saturday with a crushing 7-1 romp.
There was never any doubt of Indian victory but it was a patchy performance from the World No.5 team against the World No. 22, especially in the first half when Russia opened scoring cutting the aggregate lead to just one. But the hosts quickly bounced back and finished the first half by netting three goals. They added four in the second half as they booked their expected place in Tokyo.
