Kathmandu, Nepal, August 11, 2019: Nepal has targeted six gold medals in judo at the 13th South Asian Games which the country will host from December 1-10.
“We are expecting five to six gold medals this time,” said Birendra Ranjit, head coach of the national judo team, referring to Nepal’s two gold medals in the South Asian Judo Championships in Kathmandu last year.
Apart from these two gold medals, Nepal came close to six more titles only to lose in the finals. “We want all judokas to win medals and we are preparing accordingly,” Ranjit added.
The South Asian Games will offer 15 gold medals in judo: seven each in men’s and women’s weight categories and one in mixed team event.
Nepal won three gold medals at the last South Asian Games in India in 2016. Judo was one of the sports to bring back a gold medal with men’s football and wushu also tasting sweet success.
Nepal is planning to send its national judo squad for a two-month training camp to India and China. A 14-strong squad of previous gold medallists at international events, men and women, have been training since May. They have been joined by another 28 judokas since last week in a closed training camp.
