Thimphu, Bhutan, March 12, 2019: Bhutan will host Afghanistan in a Women’s International Friendly Basketball match in Thimphu on Wednesday, March 13, to celebrate International Women’s Day and to promote women’s participation in sports.
Samira Asghari, a former member of the Afghanistan women’s national basketball team who accompanied her compatriots to Bhutan, welcomed the occasion saying “sport can connect the world together”.
Asghari, who last year became Afghanistan’s first International Olympic Committee member and is roving ambassador for women’s participation in sport, gave the thumbs up on her first visit to Bhutan “a country very close to nature.”
The game, dubbed 'Basketball Beyond Borders', is organised by the respective Basketball Federations of Afghanistan and Bhutan and has been made possible due to funds from Olympic Solidarity.
Meanwhile, in another boost for basketball in Bhutan, the President of the Basketball Federation of Bhutan, Dashmo Jigme Namgyal, was last week elected President of the South Asian Basketball Federation. His term will run from 2019 to 2023.
