Astana, Kazakhstan, December 6, 2018: The National Olympic Committee of Kazakhstan looked back on a successful year when champions, elite athletes, veterans and sports leaders gathered on Tuesday, December 4 at the National Sports Awards 2018 ceremony at the Hilton Astana Hotel.
The winners were revealed the previous evening following two weeks of public voting on the Olympic.kz website for the nominees in the nine categories. It should be noted that, within these two weeks, Kazakhstan NOC received about 500,000 votes, reflecting the passion for sport in the country.
National sport federations submitted the nominations and the Sports Directorate compiled a shortlist for the public vote. The winners of the National Sports Awards 2018 are:
"The best athlete of the year in winter sports" - Yuliya Galysheva
"The best athlete of the year in summer sports" - Dmitriy Aleksanin
"The best coach of the year in winter sports" - Elena Kruglykhina
"The best coach of the year in summer sports" - Aliya Yussupova
"The best young athlete" - Bekarys Saduakas
"The best team of the year" - National Water Polo Team
"Breakthrough of the Year" - Gleb Brussenskiy and Yevgeniy Fedorov
"The best federation of the year in Olympic sports” - National Fencing Federation of Kazakhstan
"Best Region" - Department of Physical Culture and Sports of Shymkent
All winners were there to personally receive their award, except for PyeongChang 2018 bronze medalist Yulia Galysheva and the head coach of the freestyle moguls team, Elena Kruglykhina, because of winter season competition in Rukatunturi, Finland.
Storied athletes such as Serik Konakbayev, Ivan Garanin, Amin Tuyakov, Olga Shishigina, Alexander Vinokurov and Serik Sapiyev were invited on the stage to present the awards.
“Let me express my gratitude for this trust and opportunity to congratulate the winner in the nomination ‘Breakthrough of the Year’. This is a special nomination; it means this year all the nominees showed not only good results but surpassed themselves,” said Rio 2016 swimming champion Dmitriy Balandin.
“I want to congratulate everyone from the bottom of my heart. The best athletes are defined in the sports arena, but the appreciation of the fans means a lot to us. I wish you all a good evening, and more victories for our athletes.”
Among those who presented awards were the 2018 Teacher of the Year in preschool and secondary education, Terlikbay Kushai; Kazakhstani wunderkind in differential geometry and mathematical physics, Aknazar Kazhymurat; and the youngest member of the international academies of composers and performers of modern music, Rakhat-Bi Abdysagin.
The Minister of Culture and Sport, Arystanbek Mukhamediuly; the Minister of Information and Communications, Dauren Abayev; the Kazakhstan NOC Chairman of the Commission on Women in Sports, Umut Shayakhmetova; and South Korea’s Ambassador to Kazakhstan, Kim Desik, also presented awards.
The TV presentation of the National Sports Awards Ceremony will take place on December 9 and 31 on Qazaqstan and Qazsport TV channels, respectively.
The general sponsor of the National Sports Awards 2018 was the Petroleum group of companies, and the official sponsor was Premium Oil Trans.
The Information Partner of the National Sports Awards 2018 is JSC "RTRC" Qazaqstan. The project was supported by the hotel "Hilton Astana".
