Kabul, Afghanistan, December 6, 2018: New IOC Member Samira Asghari of Afghanistan has received the personal backing and support of the country’s president, Ashraf Ghani, in her work for the Olympic Movement.
In a Facebook post showing a video of a speech by Mr Ghani, Samira writes: “I was honored to be endorsed by HE President Ghani, (who) graciously acknowledged my IOC induction and announced his support for Olympians in Afghanistan and the Athletes.
“As a new member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) I am reliant on HE special support and close relationship with the government institutions and the National Olympic Committee of Afghanistan (NOCA) to persuade our goals of inclusion and equal opportunities for female athletes.”
Samira, 24, was elected IOC Member in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in October and attended the recent ANOC General Assembly in Tokyo, where she also called in on the OCA Women and Sport Committee to learn of the activities of the members in the five zones of the OCA.
