New Delhi, India, March 12, 2019: Asian Games gold medal-winning wrestler Bajrang Punia was among nine sports stars who was conferred with the Padma Awards by Indian President Ram Nath Kovind on Monday.
Bajrang, winner of gold medals at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang as well as the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, was one of 47 prominent and inspiring personalities to be given one of India’s highest civilian awards.
Among the other sports stars to receive the Padma Shri honours are cricketer Gautam Gambhir, football captain Sunil Chhetri, basketball player Prashanthi Singh, archer Bombayla Devi Laishram, chess grandmaster Harika Dronavalli, kabbadi captain Ajay Thakur and table tennis player Sharath Kamal.
Bachendri Pal, who became the first Indian woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest in 1984, was bestowed with the Padma Bhushan award for distinguished service of a ‘higher order’.
Apart from sports, other notable figures in the fields of politics, journalism, entertainment, medicine, social services, among others, were also honoured at a special function held at Rashtrapati Bhavan which was attended by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
As many as 112 “inspiring” personalities were selected for this year’s Padma Awards and their names were announced earlier this year. The remaining awardees will be conferred at another function on March 16.
