Bangkok, Thailand, February 28, 2019: The President of the International Handball Federation, Dr. Hassan Moustafa, has praised the role of the Asian Handball Federation President, HE Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah, in helping to form a unified Korea team at the IHF Men’s World Championship in January.
Speaking at the 22nd Ordinary Congress of the Asian Handball Federation at the Intercontinental Hotel in Bangkok on Thursday, Dr Hassan said the joint team of North and South Korea was a symbol of peace through sport.
“There was a lot of preparation and expectation for this joint Korea team and I want to give my gratitude to everyone involved,” said the Egyptian sports leader.
“For a unified Korea to play against Germany in the opening match in Berlin was very symbolic considering that, in the past, the city was divided between West Germany and East Germany. Without the support of His Highness Sheikh Ahmad we could not have achieved this.”
Sheikh Ahmad had opened the 22nd AHF Congress by congratulating the IHF President on the success of the World Championship in Germany and Denmark and on the inclusion of the joint Korean team representing both North and South.
“I would like to thank the President of the International Handball Federation for all the support to the Asian Handball Federation,” said Sheikh Ahmad.
“The Asian Handball Federation will always coordinate and cooperate with the International Handball Federation. We have seen that, through your leadership, the unity and solidarity within handball.”
In other news, the Palestine Handball Federation said it would host a competition in honour of Sheikh Ahmad’s father, Sheikh Fahad Al Ahmed Al Jaber Al Sabah, in September.
