Date : 16 Apr 2019

Tehran, Iran, April 16, 2019: President Hassan Rouhani believes Iranian athletes can make their country proud and happy at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.

In a meeting with Iran's Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Masoud Soltanifar, last Saturday, President Rouhani said he expected his country’s athletes to shine at next year’s prestigious events.

President Rouhani also called for improved access for women in sports across Iran.

“I wish the Iranian athletes to promote the name of their country and make their people proud and happy in the Olympics and Paralympics,” President Rouhani said.

“Some sports including wrestling, weightlifting, taekwondo and karate have responsibility in these games and we expect them to shine in Tokyo.

“Improving access to sports for all and supporting women’s sports are top priorities for us and I want to strengthen the sports in both areas,” he added.

President Rouhani also had his eye on football, a popular sport in the country. He said: “I hope that the Iranian U-23 football team will qualify for the Olympics after many years. The Iranian people should feel at ease with their national football team as well.”

Iran won eight medals, including three golds, at the 2016 Rio Olympics. The medals came in taekwondo, weightlifting and wrestling. And history was also created with Kimia Alizadeh becoming the first Iranian woman to win an Olympic medal when she claimed taekwondo bronze in the under-57 kilograms category.
