Colombo, Sri Lanka, November 20, 2018: Sri Lanka will host the first-ever eSports South Asia Cup in Colombo next month with participating teams having to play the hugely popular game, League of Legends.
The Sri Lanka eSports Association will host the inaugural InGame eSports South Asia Cup from December 7-9 with participating teams vying for prize money of US$5,000. The Association is working with the National eSports Federations of India, Pakistan and the Maldives to select the best teams to represent their country in the game.
Electronic Sport, better known as eSports, is the competitive aspect of video games. Worldwide the video games industry has mushroomed. In 2017 its revenue topped US$100 billion. Esports is a small part of that industry where video games are played competitively by individuals and teams and watched by millions around the world.
According to eSports analyst firm Newzoo, eSports had an audience of more than 222 million viewers globally in 2018 – on par with sports like golf. It is estimated that these numbers will rise to 316 million by 2021.
The eSports scene in Sri Lanka has taken off in recent years with organisations like InGame Entertainment hosting large-scale digital entertainment and eSports competitions annually.
Esports was a demonstration sport at this year’s Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang and has featured in previous Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games.
