Biratnagar, Nepal, March 25, 2019: India defeated hosts Nepal 3-1 in the final of the South Asian Football Federation Women’s Championship to win the title for the fifth time in a row at the Sahid Rangashala last Friday.
Dalima Chhibber, Grace Dangmei and substitute Anju Tamang scored a goal each for India who dominated the game for large periods. Sabitra Bhandari scored the solitary goal for Nepal.
This is the sixth time that India has beaten Nepal in a final – four times in the SAFF Women’s Championship and twice at the South Asian Games.
“The girls played well and all the credit goes to the players,” jubilant Indian coach Mayamol Nedugadan Rocky told the Himalayan Times.
India had beaten Bangladesh 4-0 in the semi-final while Nepal advanced to the final with an identical scoreline over Sri Lanka.
Nepal coach Hari Khadka said: “Our main weapon was the fighting spirit against all favourites India. But we could not convert our chances while our opponents did.”
India’s Dalima Chhibber was named the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament, while Nepal’s Sabitra Bhandari and India’s Indumathi Kathiresan were the joint highest scorers with four goals each.
