Doha, Qatar, May 14, 2019: Qatar’s top-ranked team of Sharif Younis and Ahmed Tijan won the Asian Beach Volleyball Championship defeating hosts China in Maoming on Sunday.
The 18th Asian Games champions, who are in the running to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, clinched the Asian title by defeating China's Gao Peng and Li Yang 21-13, 21-18 in the 33-minute final showdown to finish the competition unbeaten.
The Qatari duo, winners of the Asian Games gold medal at the Jakabaring Sports City in co-host city Palembang, capital of South Sumatra, last year, had recorded wins over Japan, Kazakhstan and China in the earlier rounds of the tournament which featured 32 teams.
Younis and Tijan are ranked seventh in the world and last month had finished third in the Xiamen Open, a stop in the 4-Star Beach Volleyball World Tour which was also part of the qualification process for the 2020 Olympics.
Both the Qatari duo and the Chinese pair will take part in the 2019 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships in Hamburg, Germany next month.
