Taiyuan, Chinese-Taipei, April 3, 2019: India ruled at the 12th Asian Airgun Championships, dominating in both the senior and junior categories, to end with a haul of 25 medals including 16 gold, five silver and four bronze.
On the last day of the championship on Monday, Yash Vardhan and Shreya Agarwal struck gold in the men’s and women’s junior 10m air rifle event respectively. They also won the team gold and combined together to win the junior mixed team rifle event to collect three gold medals each.
Agarwal won the junior women’s air rifle gold with a world junior record score of 252.5 which helped her beat South Korea’s Park Hye-jin by 1.9 points and bettered the previous world junior record mark of 252.4 set by China’s Zhao Ruozhu last year. Incidentally the world record mark is 252.9 set by India’s Apurvi Chandela at the World Cup in New Delhi recently.
Agarwal’s world beating form continued when she combined with Mehuli Ghosh and Kavi Rakshna to put together a total of 1882.2 which bettered the previous world junior record of 1880.7 set by Agarwal, Elavenil Valarivan and Manini Kaushik in the World Championship last September.
Throughout the championship, both the Indian senior and junior teams performed equally admirably to win all but two golds on offer.
