Qatar’s Al Thani re-elected as FIBA Asia President

Bengalaru, India, June 11, 2019: Sheikh Saud bin Ali Al Thani, Qatar Olympic Committee First Vice-President, has been re-elected for a third term as International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Asia President.

Former National Basketball Association (NBA) star Yao Ming was elected as chairman at the Asian governing body’s General Assembly in Bengalaru, India, on Sunday. Yao is also the chairman of the Chinese Basketball Association.

“I will do my best serving basketball and my continent. I want to thank you all for the support,” said Al Thani, who became the third elected member of the FIBA Central Board for the 2019-2023 period.

FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis congratulated Al Thani: “I want to congratulate Sheikh Al Saud for his re-election as president of FIBA Asia. We are confident that he will continue the great work he has done for basketball in Asia.”

Other new board members of FIBA Asia who were elected are: Akram Halabi, 1st Vice-President, Alfredo Panlilo, 2nd Vice President, Abhijit Sarker, Chairman Finance Committee, Ms. Xu Lan, member of gender in minority.
