Iran and Kazakhstan forge closer sporting links

Tehran, Iran, March 7, 2019: Iran and Kazakhstan will foster closer ties in sport with both countries signing a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation between Tehran and Almaty on the fringes of last week’s 38th General Assembly of the Olympic Council of Asia.

The President of the Iran Olympic Committee, Dr Seyed Reza Salehi Amiri, who met with officials from the Kazakhstan Olympic Committee on the sidelines of the annual conference in Bangkok, said a closer relationship between Tehran and Almaty would benefit both countries.

Kazakhstan has said it will forge closer links in boxing and sailing as well as in winter sports offering to host Iranian athletes and teams in winter sports camps.

In another development, the President of the Olympic Council of Asia, Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah, presented the OCA Award of Merit to veteran Iranian sports administrator Bahram Afsharzadeh for his many years of dedicated service to Iran and Asia.

Afsharzadeh, five-time secretary general of Iran NOC, has also headed the baseball, gymnastics and weightlifting federations of Iran. He is a former chairman of the OCA Information and Statistics Committee.
