Sports Minister elected new President of Vietnam NOC

Hanoi, Vietnam, April 19, 2017: The Minister of Culture, Sport and Tourism, Nguyen Ngoc Thien, was elected President of the Vietnam Olympic Committee at the 5th National Congress in Hanoi from April 15-16. His term covers the period 2016-2020. Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Chairman of the VOC from 2011 to 2016, Hoang Tuan Anh, reviewed its activities, including hosting the 5th Asian Beach Games in Danang last September and devising the plan for hosting the South East Asian Games in 2021.
The committee also played an active role in popularising the campaign “All people take exercise following the great Uncle Ho’s example”. Together with the Vietnam Sports Administration, national sports associations and federations, departments and localities, the VOC helped Vietnam athletes compete in 23 international sports events, during which they won 1,682 gold, 1,447 silver and 1,490 bronze medals.
These included the historic first Olympic gold medal for Vietnam - in shooting at Rio 2016 by Hoang Xuan Vinh - and gold at weight lifting by Le Van Cong at the 2016 Paralympics.
Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam said: “We firmly believe that the Vietnam Olympic Committee, in its 2016-2020 tenure, will do its best to help improve people’s physical health and raise Vietnam’s status in the global sports arena. We must uphold and expand the Olympic spirit to the general public”.
The VOC was also chosen as one of the nine outstanding National Olympic Committees by the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) for the ANOC Breakthrough Award 2016. The Congress elected an 81-strong executive board led by the Minister of Culture, Sport and Tourism, Nguyen Ngoc Thien.

Speaking the end of the Congress, Minister Nguyen Ngoc Thien pledged to promote and expand the sports movement nationwide, especially among students and armed forces, and extend relations with overseas Olympic movements and international sports organisations.
*The 5th Congress heard that Vietnam has set a target of 33% of the population regularly engaging in sport and physical activity by 2020.
*Focus will also be placed on improving Vietnamese athletes’ performances in regional and global sports competitions.
*Olympic champion shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh was elected Chairman of the VOC Athletes’ Committee for 2016-2020.
