Sri Lanka’s South Asian Beach Games are taking shape

Colombo, Sri Lanka: Preparations for the venue construction for the inaugural South Asian Beach Games this year in Sri Lanka are up and running. The southern harbour city of Hambantota will host the 1st SABG from October 8-14, and a ground-breaking ceremony was held on Monday, May 2.

The chief guests were the Hon. Dilan Perera, Chairman of the Organising Committee, and the Hon. Namal Rajapaksa, MP of Hambantota.

Mr RMBD Meegasmulla, District  Secretary, Hambantota , Mr Elmo Perera AVM (Retired), Director, 1st SABG Secretariat, Mrs Himali Rathnaweera, Assistant District Secretary, Hambantota, also were present at the occasion.

The Engineering Regiment of the Sri Lankan Army has undertaken the venue clearing task.
The eight competing countries are Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Hambantota is one of two cities, along with Gold Coast in Australia, bidding for the right to host the 2018 Commonwealth Games. The winner will be chosen by the Commonwealth Games Federation on November 11. (www.srilankaolympic.org)
